Pocket Pal is the name of a miniature robot, made just big enough to use a AA battery. It was originally supposed to tell Fry about certain aspects of the future, and thus function as a tool for the audience to understand the 31st-century setting better. This was abandoned early on and the character forgotten about. In The Beast with a Billion Backs, it was used by Wernstrom to demonstrate that robots cannot go through the anomaly. Farnsworth and Wernstrom then just decided to kill a bunch of other pocket pals just for the fun of it.
