Josh Gedgie was a self-described evil nerd, who stole Philip J. Fry's idea of using the common cold virus for an entry to win the Nerd Search '88 Science Competition, which he ultimately won. Despite being Fry's main rival at the competition, Fry would eventually be glad that it was Gedgie's experiment and not his that won the competition, as his experiment contained a sample of the virus that would lead to the creation of a vaccine for the common cold after it was reintroduced in the year 3011.
