The Trouble With Trilogies is the fifty-fifth comic issue, released 25 May, 2011 in the US.

The Story

Fearing that the Planet Express ship is about to crash, Fry, Bender, and Leela must each take a one-man escape pod, and they soon find themselves in separate worlds. Fry lands in a dusty, Old Western town under the thumb of a vengeful outlaw; Bender discovers a post-apocalyptic, fuel-deprived society of road warriors; and Leela becomes part of a society of blue-skinned natives who need help protecting their beloved rainforest from a military onslaught.

Allusions

The main plots of the issue are based on a western (possibly Black Bart), Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome and Avatar
Lord Manumahnuh is based on the Muppet Mahna Mahna character.
Plaid Max is based on Mel Gibson's character from Braveheart
The panel featuring the Max brothers features a cameo by Homer Simpson in the background.
Master Blaster references the character from Mad Max and the Transformers character Blaster.
Wylee is based on Wile E. Coyote from Looney Tunes.
The dragons pictured include Puff the Magic Dragon, H.R. Pufnstuf and a dragon from How to Train Your Dragon.
A man in the background at the ICU is likely to have been based on Hawkeye Pierce from M*A*S*H

Special Features

This issue features the last of the six black light posters, however it is the first not to have been used as a cover for a previous comic or comic collection. Instead it comes from a page of the 2003 calendar. The poster features Mom's head with an octopus-like body attacking the staff of Planet Express who are riding in a hover-convertable.
